COLORADO MOOSE, BIGHORN SHEEP AND MOUNTAIN GOAT HUNT INFORMATION
| March 31, 2016 | Hunt Research

Toprut is pleased to announce our latest release in our draw odds series for Colorado Moose, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goats. We’ve compiled, trended and provided you with open access to 2012 through 2015 draw odds and harvest data for each species.

It is important to note that the draw process for these species is different from how Colorado handles Elk, Mule Deer and Antelope. Applicants are selected either by preference point or from a random draw where accumulated weighted preference points are considered.

Hunters can accumulate a maximum of three preference points for Moose, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goats. After you have accumulated three preference points, you will be allocated a weighted preference point for each year you fail to draw your first choice application.

The draw process utilized for each hunt is completely contingent upon the overall pool of applicants. Applicants that have received the maximum of 3 preference points are considered before other preference point holders. All first choice applicants with 3 preference points are entered into a random draw process. This is where each applicants weighted points come into play. The random draw is conducting by first assigning each applicant a random number. Then, the random number assigned to each applicant is divided by their accumulated weighted points (not preference points), plus one. For example, if you had 3 preference points and 4 weighted points, then, the random number assigned to your application would be divided by 5 (4 weighted points + 1). The overall result is a new application number for each applicant. All application numbers are then sorted from low to high. Applicants are selected based upon lowest application number until all available licenses are allocated. If there are remaining tags available after the random draw has been concluded, then, the tags are randomly assigned to first choice applicants with the most preference points.

If you’re a nonresident and have dreamed of hunting a Moose, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep or Mountain Goats, Colorado has some terrific opportunities available for “cow” hunts available without having to wait multiple years. For example, take a look at moose in unit 6.

The 2016 application deadline is April 5.
